World Cup 2026 Group J Preview: Argentina, Austria, Algeria, Jordan

Group J has the biggest storyline of the tournament: Lionel Messi's almost-certainly-final World Cup, defending the title. Beyond Argentina, Austria are deceptively good. Algeria have a real squad again. Jordan are at their first World Cup ever.

The teams at a glance

  • Argentina — FIFA #3. Defending champions. Argentina preview.
  • Austria — FIFA #24. Reached Euro 2024 R16. Austria preview.
  • Algeria — FIFA #28. Returning after missing 2018 and 2022.
  • Jordan — FIFA #65. First World Cup ever.

Argentina: defending champions, Messi's last dance

Argentina won the 2022 World Cup, won Copa América 2024, and have added depth — Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Cristian Romero. Messi at 38-39 may not start every group game, but Lionel Scaloni has built the squad around him without making him essential 90 minutes a match.

Argentina should win Group J with 7-9 points. Messi's minutes are the X factor — fewer minutes in the group stage means a fresher Messi for the knockouts, which is what every Argentine wants.

Austria: the European team most pool fillers will overlook

Austria reached the Euro 2024 Round of 16 and won their group ahead of France. The squad is built around David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer, Christoph Baumgartner, Marko Arnautović, Konrad Laimer. Ralf Rangnick's pressing system makes them dangerous to any team that plays out the back.

Austria's realistic ceiling: 2nd place, possibly even topping the groupif Argentina rotate heavily. They're the smartest non-Argentina pick in the group.

Algeria: rebuilt, dangerous, but unproven

Algeria missed both 2018 and 2022 after disastrous qualifying campaigns. The 2026 squad is a rebuild around Riyad Mahrez (still elite at the right time), Ismaël Bennacer, Houssem Aouar, and Mohamed Amoura. Defensively they have questions.

Algeria's realistic outcome: 4 points, 3rd place. Mahrez is capable of single-handedly beating Austria or stealing a draw against Argentina. Wildcard candidate with a good goal difference.

Jordan: just being here is enormous

Jordan qualified for their first World Cup ever after reaching the Asian Cup final in 2024. The squad is built around Mousa Al-Tamari (Montpellier) and Ali Olwan. They will be motivated and physical but lack the technical depth to advance.

Realistic outcome: 0-1 points, 4th place. The Asian Cup run was spectacular but a step up to World Cup level is significant. They will not embarrass themselves.

Predictions

  1. 1st: Argentina — Messi's squad and tournament pedigree.
  2. 2nd: Austria — Rangnick's system makes them a tough out.
  3. 3rd: Algeria — Mahrez magic gives them a chance.
  4. 4th: Jordan — historic appearance, no realistic path.

Bracket strategy for Group J

  • Argentina 1st is chalk.Don't bet against Messi closing out a group with the title on the line.
  • Austria 2nd is the smart play. Most fillers will pick Algeria because of Mahrez. Austria are the steadier bet.
  • Algeria as a wildcard is volatile.Their floor is 0 points, their ceiling is 7. If you're hunting bracket differentiation, this is one of the best plays.
