World Cup 2026 Group A Preview: Mexico, South Korea, Czechia, South Africa

Group A kicks off the World Cup. Mexico host the opening match at Estadio Azteca on June 11. South Korea bring the most recognizable attacker in the group. Czechia and South Africa are the wildcards no one is ranking high enough. Here's how to read it.

The teams at a glance

  • Mexico — FIFA #15. Group hosts. El Tri preview.
  • South Korea — FIFA #25. Son Heung-min's likely final World Cup. Korea preview.
  • Czechia — FIFA #41. Solid European structure, mid-tier attack.
  • South Africa — FIFA #58. Bafana Bafana's first World Cup since 2010.

Mexico: home crowds + opening-match adrenaline

Mexico are not the most talented team in this group on paper, but they will play their first match at Estadio Azteca in front of 87,000 screaming Mexican fans. That alone is worth a goal. Santiago Giménez leads the line. Edson Álvarez anchors the midfield. The squad is deep and tournament-tested.

Mexico almost always escape the group stage — they've done it 7 of the last 8 World Cups. Picking them 1st here is the chalk pick. The bigger question: do they finally beat a top-10 side in the knockouts? That's a Round of 16 conversation.

South Korea: Son Heung-min carries the group's biggest name

Son Heung-min's last World Cup. The 33-year-old Tottenham captain is still elite, but Korea's ceiling depends on whether Lee Kang-in (PSG) and Hwang Hee-chan (Wolves) can take pressure off him. Kim Min-jae is the back-line anchor.

Korea reached the Round of 16 in 2022. They have the experience to survive a tough group, but goal scoring is a real concern in tight games. Expect 2 wins, 1 draw, 5 points minimum — that usually punches a ticket through.

Czechia: the European spoiler

Czechia are the team most pool-fillers ignore. Patrik Schick is a legitimate top-tier striker when fit. Tomáš Souček gives them a strong midfield base. Their game model under Ivan Hašek is pragmatic but effective.

The path: avoid losing to Mexico, beat South Africa, and steal one from Korea. That gets them to 4–5 points and either 2nd in the group or a wildcard slot.

South Africa: the underdog with bite

Bafana Bafana qualified for the first time in 16 years. The squad is young — Lyle Foster (Burnley), Mihlali Mayambela, Percy Tau bring real attacking quality. Defensively they're vulnerable.

Realistic goal: 1 win, possibly a draw. Most likely 4th, but if they nick a result against Czechia they could slide into the wildcard conversation.

Predictions

  1. 1st: Mexico — home advantage + opening match energy.
  2. 2nd: South Korea — Son and Lee Kang-in are the difference makers.
  3. 3rd: Czechia — strong wildcard candidate.
  4. 4th: South Africa — likely group exit but won't be embarrassed.

Bracket strategy for Group A

  • Don't overthink Mexico 1st.Home crowds and opening-match energy are real. They're a fine top pick.
  • Czechia is the contrarian play for 3rd. Most pools will pick a more famous team. Czechia advancing as a wildcard with Schick on form is very plausible.
  • Korea 2nd is safer than Korea 1st. Beating Mexico in Mexico City is a tall order even for a fully-fit Son.
