World Cup 2026 Group E Preview: Germany, Ecuador, Côte d'Ivoire, Curaçao

Group E is the most balanced "mid-tier" group of the tournament. Germany are the favorites but not by much. Ecuador are defensively elite. Côte d'Ivoire are the reigning AFCON champions. Curaçao's qualification is one of the great feel-good stories of the cycle.

The teams at a glance

  • Germany — FIFA #10. Four-time champions. Germany preview.
  • Ecuador — FIFA #23. Tight defense, modest attack.
  • Côte d'Ivoire — FIFA #34. 2024 AFCON champions.
  • Curaçao — FIFA #88. First World Cup in country history.

Germany: the rebuild has teeth again

After two straight group-stage exits (2018, 2022), Germany finally look like Germany again. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala headline a generational creative core. Kai Havertz and Niclas Füllkrug split striker duties. Joshua Kimmich anchors midfield. Antonio Rüdiger and Jonathan Tah are a top-5 centerback pairing.

Germany are the favorites here, but not overwhelmingly so. They should win Group E. They will not steamroll it. Expect 2 wins, 1 draw, 7 points, +3 goal difference.

Ecuador: don't bet on goals

Ecuador are one of the toughest defenses to score against in CONMEBOL qualifying. Moisés Caicedo (Chelsea) is the best holding midfielder in the group. Pervis Estupiñán and Piero Hincapié anchor the back four. Enner Valencia, the all-time top scorer, is still around at age 36.

The model: 3 low-scoring matches, lots of 1-0 and 0-0 outcomes. 5–6 points and a 2nd-place finish is the realistic ceiling. They will not outscore Germany, but they almost certainly won't lose to anyone else either.

Côte d'Ivoire: AFCON champions for a reason

Côte d'Ivoire won the 2024 AFCON on home soil after a chaotic group stage. Sébastien Haller (cancer survivor, scored the AFCON-final winner) leads the line. Franck Kessié controls midfield. Simon Adingra and Amad Diallo bring pace on the wings.

The Elephants are the team most likely to swing this group on a single moment. They can absolutely beat Ecuador. They can theoretically upset Germany. Most realistic: 4 points, 3rd place, wildcard conversation.

Curaçao: enjoy the moment

Curaçao have a population of 152,000 and just qualified for the World Cup. The Dick Advocaat-managed squad is built largely from Netherlands-based pros with Curaçaoan heritage — Cuco Martina, Leandro Bacuna, Tahith Chong. They will not be embarrassed.

Realistic outcome: 0-1 points, 4th place. Best-case scenario is stealing a draw against Côte d'Ivoire. Don't pick them to advance — but expect them to make a couple of matches very interesting.

Predictions

  1. 1st: Germany — talent advantage shows in the second half of matches.
  2. 2nd: Ecuador — defensive reliability in a low-scoring group.
  3. 3rd: Côte d'Ivoire — strong wildcard candidate.
  4. 4th: Curaçao — historic appearance, but the math is hard.

Bracket strategy for Group E

  • Germany 1st is chalk in default pools.Worth picking even if you're skeptical of their tournament-football execution.
  • Ecuador 2nd over Côte d'Ivoire is the smart play. The Ecuadorian defense is a real edge in tight matches.
  • Côte d'Ivoire as a wildcard is value. They have the talent and the AFCON pedigree most pool-fillers will underrate.
