World Cup 2026 Group H Preview: Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Cabo Verde
Group H is one of the most lopsided groups on paper but with a real chance of an upset along the way. Spain are the tournament title favorites. Uruguay are deep and dangerous. Saudi Arabia have done it before. Cabo Verde are the smallest country ever to qualify.
The teams at a glance
- Spain — FIFA #2. Reigning Euro champions. Spain preview.
- Uruguay — FIFA #17. Bielsa-built side, top-heavy attack. Uruguay preview.
- Saudi Arabia — FIFA #55. Beat Argentina 2-1 in 2022 group stage.
- Cabo Verde — FIFA #70. First World Cup; population ~520,000.
Spain: tournament favorites for a reason
Spain won Euro 2024 in dominant fashion. The squad is the best in the tournament: Lamine Yamal (still 18 in summer 2026), Nico Williams, Pedri, Rodri, Dani Olmo, Mikel Merino, Fabián Ruiz. The defense rotates Aymeric Laporte, Robin Le Normand, Pau Cubarsí. Unai Simón in goal. There's no obvious weakness.
Spain should win Group H with 9 points and a +6 goal difference. Anything less would be a real surprise. They're the chalk pick across every pool format.
Uruguay: built for tournament football
Uruguay under Marcelo Bielsa play a high-press, vertical, chaotic style. Federico Valverde anchors midfield. Darwin Núñez and Maxi Araújo provide pace. Ronald Araújo and José Giménez are world-class center backs. Luis Suárez is gone but his replacements are legitimate.
Uruguay's ceiling is the semifinals. In Group H, they're a near-lock for 2nd. Picking them top in upset bonus pools is a play worth thinking about — Spain are not unbeatable.
Saudi Arabia: the team that already pulled off the impossible
Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1 in the 2022 group stage. They won't catch anyone by surprise this time. The squad mostly plays in the Saudi Pro League — Salem Al-Dawsari is still the most dangerous attacker, Mohammed Al-Owais in goal, Saud Abdulhamid at the back.
Realistic outcome: 3-4 points and a 3rd-place finish. They are dangerous on a single occasion but lack the depth to consistently compete with Spain or Uruguay.
Cabo Verde: the smallest country ever to qualify
Cabo Verde have a population of about 520,000 — the smallest country ever to qualify for a World Cup. The squad is built largely from Portuguese-based pros with Cabo Verdean heritage. Ryan Mendes leads the attack. Defensively they'll struggle against any well-organized attack.
Realistic outcome: 0-1 points, 4th place. The achievement is the qualification. Don't pick them to advance.
Predictions
- 1st: Spain — best squad in the tournament.
- 2nd: Uruguay — high floor, dangerous in knockouts.
- 3rd: Saudi Arabia — wildcard chance with a good result.
- 4th: Cabo Verde — historic qualification, no realistic advance path.
Bracket strategy for Group H
- Spain 1st is the chalkiest pick in the tournament. Lock it in.
- Uruguay 2nd is the smart play. They're the biggest squad in the bottom half of any group's top 2 — a real threat to advance to the quarterfinals.
- Saudi Arabia for a wildcard is risky.Their ceiling is high but their floor is 0 points. If you're hunting differentiation, this is one play.
